They Met at a Tavern 16: Into the Caluromys Chambers

Who showed up and had to try to hear me over baseball playoffs?

  • Jema: Half-orc Desert Rider
  • Brandon: Halfling Wizard
  • Gurleen:  Elf Fighter
  • Seana: Elf Thief

Using something I've had knocking around for five years or so... Looking at the printout I have in my adventures folder, I can tell I've at least prepped it for play (notes on hp, treasures, etc.) but I couldn't find a writeup or other play notes so... I guess this is a first playthrough?

Started the four miscreants at the entrance. Made a call that the wizard had some knowledge of the place and its prior worshipers.

They immediately came upon the first serpent-folk guard and his watch-lizard. The pair were put down with a brief fight. Finding the first Possimium statue, the fighter prudently added a few coins to its alms bowl, preventing its trap function.

The quartet worked their way through the corridors, backtracking if they though it was wise to check another passageway or route deeper into the complex. Finding a sarcophagus with its attendant bust of the interred hero, they respectfully left it alone. Finding the second Possimium statue, a few more coins were left, for good measure.

Around now, a second guard and lizard found them and attacked. More slaying. A poisoned well was located. No drinky. The four gently negotiated their way around a hole in the floor, avoiding collapse.

A mysterious stele was inspected and poked at. Two bored serpent-folk guards were surprised. One held the party as the second fled for reinforcements. The party retreated, leaving an alarm spell at the stele and circled through other passages until coming up behind the waiting guards. Surprising them, they were able to dispatch these foes, as well...

Continuing with their explorations, the party paused at some pretty light-show fountains. Around the corner they came face to face with two pair of serpent-folk guards and larger "myrmidon" warriors. One each retreated deeper into the chambers, as the other two held off the party. Healing potions were spent.

Into the temple, under new management, in the form of a serpent-folk shaman and his acolyte, who were attempting to consecrate the place via their own runes and summoning circle. Well, this will not do.

The wizard understood draconic, and confronted the serpent-folk. They, in turn, referred to the party as "meddling monkeys," which didn't make any friends. The desert rider charged the two priests, disrupting the ritual. The shaman's burning hands roll failed, sparing the desert rider.

The wizard was pretty much burned out of spells by now, as the fighter attempted to confront the guard and myrmidon. Which didn't go well. Somewhere in this the mage and fighter alternatively went down, to be revived by the last healing potions. The thief successfully sniped at the shaman, with the desert rider delivering the killing blow.

With this, the injured serpent-folk acolyte said enough is enough and bought off the party with the shaman's jade amulet. The surviving serpent-folk departed with more grumbling about "monkeys" under their breath.

Exiting the complex, the party found the sacred pool and its debilitated water spirit. A bit of insight, and some holy water brought the spirit back to focus. The spirit pointed the four towards a hidden cache, and everyone got plenty of carousing coin....

DM Notes:

Had some good players who were able to pick up on clues (such as the potential statue trap and cure for the water spirit). They were also quick to recognize the potential for looping passages and took advantage of the space.

Per my accurate mapping

And in post-game discussions, we also determined that the availability of parking is a serious criteria for random Meetup games. Although it wasn't on my mind when I started running my public games, some areas of the city are ass for parking, so maybe I should advertise the fact... I've also had public transit availability mentioned, too. So there's that. Speaking of, looks like I'll have some Repeat Offenders for tonight's game, and a couple are already coordinating transit carpooling.

Probably something with a bit of a creepy or Halloweeny vibe for the season tonight...

Funny story: Hanging after with the usual suspects at the brewery and Amanda, one of the brewery staff, recounted first seeing me at the brewery. From her perspective, I was this quiet, serious-looking guy making notes on cellar maps. Clearly a serial killer labeling where the bodies were buried. "What's up with Dungeon Dude?" she asked her coworker, who explained that I was just making adventure notes.

I mean, I could still be a serial killer. It is the Northwest, after all.

Damnit, Athena. You aren't helping.
