Random Magic Item: Lamp of the Hound

From the item description: "Bronze plastic lamp in the form of the head of a greyhound, holding a hare in its mouth. The hound's eyes are inlaid with discs of silver (one missing)..."

Really, I can't do better than that...

Lamp of the Hound

An item created by Olozin of Vakbodom, an enchanter of no small power, who also quite loved his coursing-hounds. Having lost several cherished dogs on his journeys, the mage was reluctant to continue to bring them along on his travels, electing to leave them at home in the care of their handlers. However, Olozin was still in need of a loyal hound or two, and calling upon the soul of a departed dog to temporarily serve in their stead was a suitable compromise.

Casting the bronze lantern, the metal's forge was stoked with the bones of deceased hounds, and Olozin enchanted the bronze through sorceries and geometries to bind the souls of departed dogs to the artifact.

When the Lamp of the Hound is lit, a distant baying will be heard, followed within 2d4 rounds by the approach of 1d3 incorporeal ghost-hounds to accompany its bearer.

Once summoned, the hounds will remain within the radius of the lantern-light. The bearer may use the hounds to track prey (75% chance of success), guard a perimeter, or take part in melee. The dogs will always circle and protect the lantern-bearer, although they may be commanded to take action on behalf of another character who is within the lantern's light-radius.

Olozin's Ghost-hound: 2HD, AC3/16, Atk 2d4, may attack incorporeal creatures or creatures requiring weapons to hit. As undead, they do not make morale rolls, nor are they affected by mental magics. Incorporeal creatures, the ghost-hounds may only be damaged by silver or magic. If slain, the ghost-hound fades away. As magically-summoned creatures, they may also be dispelled.

The lantern may be lit once per day to summon the ghost-hounds and will burn and provide light as a normal lantern, four hours duration. If lit a second time, it will function as a normal lantern.

There is a 5% chance that once the lantern burns out, one hound may remain as a Dead Pet
